Healthy, Healing Hot Chocolate

Do these chilly winter days have you looking for a mid-afternoon pick me up or post-dinner tasty treat? Me too. 

Winter means we often turn to comfort-eating and sugary snacks for a quick burst of energy. But, once that craving has been satisfied, we then experience a sugar-crash and are left feeling even more drained. And so the cycle continues! 

Luckily, we’ve discovered the BEST, most DELICIOUS and NUTRITIOUS alternative: cacao. 

Rather than reaching for snacks that are destined to do more damage than good, swap out those refined sugars for a comforting, healing and healthy hot chocolate using ceremonial cacao powder! 

Get your energy kick without the comedown – or putting any stress on your (already overworked!) adrenal system. What’s more, ceremonial grade cacao is absolutely packed with nutrients: 

x13 more antioxidants than blueberries

x10 more magnesium than bananas

x3 more iron than spinach

x2.5 more fibre than oats

Healing Salted Chili Hot Chocolate Recipe: (Gluten free, Vegan)

  • 1-2TBPS heaped cacao
  • 1tbsp coconut sugar
  • 1 dash of vanilla essence
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1/4 tsp chili flakes
  • 1 cup of coconut milk or plant-based milk of choice 

Heat coconut milk first on a stove stop before adding in remaining ingredients. Adjust to taste and enjoy!

Tip: If you have a steaming wand and are able to froth milk, use almond milk instead as it froths better than coconut. Mix your chilli hot chocolate with 1/4 cup of boiling water and then pour hot almond milk on top.  

For a high protein version, add in a TBSP of chocolate protein powder to your hot chocolate! Macro Mikes Premium Almond Choc Hazelnut Fondant Protein is a great option for this!
